Endometriosis has long been wrongly perceived to be rare among women of African descent. The misconception about the prevalence of endometriosis among African women has significantly contributed to long diagnostic delays, limited access to diagnosis and care, and a scarcity of research on the condition among African women. In this presentation, I will highlight the prevalence of endometriosis among African women, the state of endometriosis research and care in Africa with a special focus on my research group, and the gaps in knowledge that need to be addressed. In addition, I will discuss the challenges facing the endometriosis research in the African continent and the collaborative opportunities with the Global North institutions.

  • Dr. Ezekiel Onyonka Mecha

    Senior Lecturer, Department of Biochemistry University of Nairobi - School of Medicine
    Dr. Mecha is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Nairobi School of Medicine and holds a Ph.D. from Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany. He has over 15 years of experience in research, training, and advocacy on reproductive health conditions, including endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, and other uterine disorders, and has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles in international journals. He is a member of the World Endometriosis Society, served as its Ambassador from 2021 to 2023, and participates in its mentoring program. He currently leads a multi-sectoral and multi-professional initiative aimed at improving endometriosis and adenomyosis management and developing a national government policy in Kenya. Dr. Mecha is a founding member and board member of the Pan Africa Society of Endometriosis (PASE). He is an associate member of the Kenya Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society, a member of the Society of Reproduction and Fertility (UK), and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Reproduction and Fertility (Scotland). He is Director of Endometriosis East Africa and organized the 1st and 2nd East African Endometriosis Congresses in 2021 and 2022. He also chairs the University of Nairobi DAAD Scholars Association and serves on the national executive council, is a DIES alumnus, an expert in COIL, and actively involved in internationalization training and multiple mentorship programs.
